Wishing you a Soulful and Loving 2012

Psychic Readings by Kathleen
Many of you who read my ezine ask that I tell more stories about the questions people ask and the accompanying readings that reveal futures unfolding as predicted. It’s a complicated task due to my rather anal adherence to confidentiality. Even not identifying the who and only the narrative itself makes me squeamish.
What I can confidently say is that the most common conundrum facing both men and women who come to me for readings is in the realm of love and at the top of the love list, not surprisingly is lover. Other love questions such as those involving children, parents, siblings and friends are also queried but hands down, it’s the anguish of lovers that tops the list. Taking into account my particularly skewed perspective, in part due to the type of work I do, I would have to say monogamy has gone the way of the dinosaurs. I’m always confounded by how many people are unfamiliar with the word’s meaning. It means having sex with only one person just in case you are one. Curiously it still has value in most people’s heart. Tremendous value actually. Yet so few address it openly. Asking a perspective partner if they are having sex with only you would seem to be too embarrassing a subject to raise. Having been sexually active and single throughout most of the VD, herpes and AIDS era, I was indoctrinated to ask that vital question to all my partners. As a matter of fact I asked to see his VD and AIDS test results and I’ll be happy to show him mine. if a man said he had never been tested and he wasn’t a virgin either, he was immediately relegated to the “pal” division. In my mind he was one crazy dude and definitely not one to share more than a howdy with. My husband plopped his medical report on the table at our second date without even having to be asked. I was instantly star struck over his honesty and lack of denial. My heart thumped with greater certainty that this was the man of my dreams.
If you’re worried that the question of monogamy will be taken as a wheedling for commitment, you are certainly at liberty to include a caveat that you are not asking for his hand in marriage but rather for his state of health. I never met a man in my life who was so desirable he was worth dying of AIDS or VD for. Not one. And if you believe that simply because you are having an affair with a married man, he’s only sleeping with you and his wife, or even worse not with his wife either, please return to entry and check your ego at the door. That notion definitely falls under the heading, Denial. Sadly I’ve never met a man who asked me how many sex partners I’ve had. No man wants to brave that door. That means no man I’ve slept with has a clue how many men I’ve slept with. That’s enough to give the bravest of us pause.
Other more complex issues arise as the relationship progresses from dates to relationship. Loving someone fiercely who doesn’t return our affections and adjusting/adapting/accepting is one I hear most often at this stage of development. It’s so annoying that we cannot, no matter what we do make another love or desire us. Although when you consider the horror of someone else possessing the ability to make you love or desire them, you feel almost grateful at this state of affairs even in the throes of the worst frustration imaginable.
Finding the one is especially complicated for us humans. We all possess a heck of lot more criteria than we realize at first blush. I often hear people extolling (men and women) the virtues of gentleness, consideration, respect and reasonable attractiveness. So financial stability is irrelevant I ask rather tongue in cheek? Oh absolutely they gush. So an unemployed, homeless person who is beautiful and considerate is fine? Hell no. I just want an ordinary human, gainfully employed, right age (no more variance than 5 years), shared cultural/religious/nationality affiliations and wants to get married. And is my soul mate of course. Really? Why would you imagine your true spiritual soul mate would embody any of those qualities? In fact since spirit’s job is to teach us something, wouldn’t it be far more likely that our soul mate would be absolutely and completely different from ourselves? No doubt why few of us actually do marry our soul mates.
I also point out to most of my clients that finding the perfect mate is a very serious undertaking. You wouldn’t invest in a home you’ve just clapped eyes on. A mate! That is a far more serious investment. You are going to share everything in your life with this person. Your family, your body, your money, your friends, your dreams and in fact your whole future. Perhaps even children! Do you know how hard it is for a male alligator (or any males in the animal kingdom for that matter) to convince a female to mate with him? For some it involves some rather terrifying and death defying stunts to prove himself worthy of joining the gene pool. And it’s incumbent upon the females of the species to make sure the test really is tough. That’s a lot of responsibility. The survival of the species depends upon that discriminatory dance. And if you think you’re going to get hot in time with someone who just fits in every other way, get out of your imagination and into reality. Our sexual attraction is there or not. We are turned on or NOT. Our ideal mate is not a matter of all heart, or all head, or all body. He’s going to be the whole package. And yes you are going to feel terrified, vulnerable, needy, sick - probably suicidal half the time but you are going to feel ALIVE. You’ll know you are with the right one. Because every part of you that makes you human knows this is the right one for you. Now he has to feel exactly the same way. That’s the complicated part.
Fortunately we don’t all have the same focus for our affections. One woman’s ambrosia is another woman’s poison. The most important thing is to know what you want. What are your non-negotiables? What darkness in him are you prepared to embrace? Because trust me that will be the greatest challenge of your life. His good points are a breeze but know that everyone of us is 50/50. You know that generosity you love so much? Well that can manifest in really annoying behaviours like buying his friends - friends you can’t stand for example. You know how he always looks gorgeous when you go out together and every woman in the room drools with envy? Well that can turn into the most severe critic when you’re having a bad hair day. Know your non-negotiables and be prepared to love him even when you hate him.
If you’re an online shopper for a soulmate, be ready to kiss many, many, many frogs before you meet your prince and have skin like kevlar. It’s a great exercise however, in sampling what your mate priorities truly are and are not.
I believe there is nothing in our lives more important than finding our special mate. Sharing your lives with another person who is your most favourite person in the world is a wonder, joy and pleasure like no other. But don’t for a second imagine that this is going to be easy, pleasant, or even fun most the time. Anything worth having is going to be a lot of hard work, tears, self discipline, and gritty determination. You will have to stare down your inner monsters (insecurity, fears of abandonment and rejection), resist urges to grab at an imaginary control you don’t have, and be yourself no matter what temptation grips you in the face of a high, potential loss.
I wish all of you a love filled 2012. May this be the year you brave the challenge of finding that special someone to love with your whole heart and who sings your soul’s song at full throttle.

Quote:
“People who come to me to read their cards often mistake me for a magician. They think or hope that I can cast a spell and make recalcitrant men fall madly in love with them, make ex-wives vanish into ether, and produce engagement rings from thin air. I can’t do this. What I can do is hold up a mirror and show them how they look to the outside world, that they are worthy of love but also in denial. I call a spade a spade. If they are deluding themselves, I gently tell them so. Do my clients hear me? Yes, but it takes time to sink in. Often they walk away annoyed or tell me I do not understand the situation. Then six months or a year down the road comes the contrite phone call confirming what I said as true.”

Happy Yuletide!
7. December 2011 by admin.
I love this liminal time, when the tide of All Hallows gives way to the Yuletide. Now that we’ve harvested and eaten our pumpkins we’re bringing out the holly, the ivy, and the candles to welcome the return of the Sun from the South pole to the the North. The Old Ones still hold sway for a few weeks yet–this darkest time of the year remains their season. No wonder there are so many folktales about the dead visiting the living on Christmas Eve!
As we respond this month to our cultural imperative to shop, socialize, prepare for Yuletide celebrations both at work and home, remember to take advantage of this yearly gateway opening to the Spirit World. This year especially as we stand at the precipice of 2012. According to the esoteric writings of East and West, each of us earthbound travelers is guided by one or more advanced spirits whose purpose it is to love and protect us unconditionally. Plato’s teacher Socrates, declared by the Oracle of Delphi to be the wisest living person, had a disconcerting habit of wandering through the streets of Athens in apparent conversation with himself. By his own account, he was engaged with his daemon– an entity that, since his early childhood, had served as his moral guide. As he explained, “In the past the prophetic voice to which I have become accustomed has always been my constant companion, opposing me even in quite trivial things if I was going to take the wrong course.” As to its origin, he explains, “When a good man dies he has honour and a mighty portion among the dead, and becomes a daemon, which is a name given to him signifying wisdom.”
Within the iconography of organized religions, visitations from the spirit world took the form of Angels. It was while Prophet Mohammed was meditating in a grotto near Mecca that the archangel Gabriel revealed to him that he had been chosen by Allah. Through the Old and New Testaments, God’s senior angels ran a direct courier service to Moses, Jacob and St. Paul. A line of early martyrs claimed visitations by the risen Christ or Madonna, then reportedly became visiting saints after their own deaths. In the first century, Augustine was turned from his debauched ways by an angel. In the fifteen century, Joan of Arc believed herself summoned to her heroic mission by the archangel Michael, who appeared to her in a form as solid as her eventual accusers.
Napoleon Bonaparte also thought himself a host to guiding spirits — a shining sphere that encouraged and a red dwarf who warned.(while his spouse Josephine studied and read the Tarot!)
In the 20th century, Dr. Carl Jung (influential psychiatrist) relied on the wisdom of a spirit guide named, Philemon. When Philemon first appeared to Jung as an old man with horns and wings, Jung described him as a wise fragment of himself (psychological interpretation). However, as Philemon developed in physical and psychological reality, Jung identified him as an outside independent entity. At times, Philemon was so manifest that Jung could often be found chatting with him in the garden explaining that this engagement was no different from consulting a living guru.
Edgar Cayce, a famous spiritual healer in the 20th century, claimed to have been visited several times by a dark complected and turbaned figure who warned him when others were trying to exploit him.
Transpersonal therapy, the brainchild of two psychiatrists, Grof and Maslow, is aimed at direct experience of the sacred without the crutch of drugs: Like Spiritualism in the Victorian Age, this movement answered a secular call for something that aims to marry science and religion. As Grof witnessed his wife’s descent into alcoholism after suffering childbirth trauma, he had a powerful insight about addictions which would significantly contribute to the evolution of attitudes and treatment of the addiction disease process. He understood that to hit bottom with alcohol and drugs was like a perverse re-enactment of the shamanic journey. Like Shamans, addicts descended into the underworld, where they were tortured by supernatural spirits before ascending into the light to be reborn. This connection between addiction and spiritual aspiration had already been intuited by William James a century earlier, “The sway of alcohol over humankind is unquestionably due to its power to stimulate the mystical faculties of human nature, usually crushed to earth by the cold facts and dry criticisms of sober hour.”
Jung also noted the connection between alcoholic spirits and the sacred kind in a 1961 letter to Bill Wilson, co-founder of AA. Comparing the craving for alcohol to a low-level thirst for union with God, Jung declared the antidote to be spiritus contra spiritum—Spirits against spirits. In other words the cure for addiction lies down the spiritual path to light and right purpose.
All of this spiritual her/historical preamble is to suggest that it’s also not such a random coincidence that the Yuletide season festivities constellate the consumption of “spirits”! However you celebrate this magical and liminous season, I hope it is one resplendent with love and an excited anticipation of that so soon to be 2012.

“What began as a strength of the Society for Psychical Research became its folly: defining itself in the terms of its materialistic critics. Eventually, its well-meaning search for irrefutable physical evidence encouraged mediums - some of whom possessed genuine gifts- to manipulate their audiences with ever-grosser tricks, so that investigation of death, soul and God came to turn upon the concealed contents of a subject’s bloomers. Yet, according to history’s greatest seers, psychic phenomena are of little consequence unless related to spiritual development. The medium is not the message. Inner meaning is. Why, not how.”

The Spiritual Significance of 11:11:11
1. November 2011 by admin.
Celebrate the Opening Star Gate on 11:11:11
Psychic Readings by Kathleen
Lately many new clients have been asking me what it is exactly that I do. What are tarot cards? Is that all you do is tarot reading? How do you know the things you do?
The closest definition I have found to date for what I do is a process called “scrying”. Scrying has been the centre of tribal life for millennium by Cybelles, Druids, Priestesses, Shamans and Seers. These roles were assumed by those who expressed the gift at an early age and were apprenticed to a more experienced practitioner for education and spiritual guidance.
There are as many different scrying methods as there are cultures. From water or crystal ball gazing, to throwing bones, stones, coins and melted wax, individual scryers will modify aspects of the method they use to suit their own needs, or will invent entirely new techniques. No matter how they may differ however, scryers rely on the same basic psychological mechanism.
The scryer concentrates awareness upon some physical object, or uses a preset series of mental or physical actions, in order to bring about a receptive mental state capable of receiving information gathered by the deep mind. Ordinary consciousness blocks the reception of this scried information. That is why it is so rare to get an extrasensory perception when we are engaged in our ordinary day-to-day activities. When we scry (no matter which method we use) we induce a receptive state of consciousness. We also instruct the deep mind that we are open and prepared to trust information that has not been obtained through our five senses.
If we do not specify a particular type of information, we may receive anything and will probably have a difficult time determining what it means. If we fix our conscious awareness to the specific area of information we wish to extract before we begin scrying, this instructs the deep mind to send us data in a very narrow range. This is why I always guide a client to ask questions or at least give me some idea of the theme they would like me to focus upon. A narrowly defined topic can yield more useful data saving the client the labourious problem of listening to a diatribe on things they have not the slightest interest in hearing!
Scrying does not depend on objects such as crystal balls or tarot cards or a black mirror. These are aids to scrying, nothing more. In themselves they have no power whatsoever. A skilled scryer can scry with nothing but her own mind. The tools do not enable scrying in themselves, but they help create a favourable mental condition that encourages the formation of the necessary receptive state of consciousness.
Over time, with years of practice, a particular object like tarot cards, can act as the perfect trigger or key that induces in a few moments the desired mindstate for scrying. The tools belonging to a scryer acquire power for that scryer through repeated use. Unfortunately those same tools will not have power for another scryer, since that person has not formed the conditioned reflex patterns that allow those tools to act as triggers to induce receptive awareness.
In this coming month pay special attention to 11:11:11. This will mark what spiritual watchers call “the opening of the Star Gate”. We have just completed the Mayan cycle (the 26,000 year cycle) exactly on the day the world reportedly tipped the 7 billion population. Study your dreams mindfully on November 11th! Many of us will have dreams, not just pertaining to our own personal lives but to the bigger picture of life on earth for everyone. And this will be the perfect day to practice scrying!

Quote:
“Miss X (Miss Goodrich Freer), author of Essays in Psychical Research, herself an experienced crystal gazer, says that the best way to begin scrying is to look about the room and observe some brightly coloured object, close the eye and try to transfer the picture to the ball. If this is successful, the next stage should be an attempt to recall a vivid memory picture and to transfer it into the ball in the same way. After this it is very likely that spontaneous images will also appear.”

Psychic Readings by Kathleen
It is commonly acknowledged today among spiritual seekers that there is a body-psyche connection. Unfortunately however, it is also assumed that if the psyche can be strengthened, it will simply carry the body along with it. In other words, it is thought that the psychic energy will penetrate the cells of the body, allowing transformation to take place in both realms at the same time. This implies, of course, that the body is secondary in importance to the psyche, as it would then just be “following along” so to speak. I consider this assumption to be false, as over and over again we can see that the body does not simply follow the progress of the psyche. It often has a “mind” of it’s own and needs to be treated accordingly. In my experience, the simultaneous transformation of the body and psyche is only possible if both sides are worked on at the same time.
In the East, mind and body were never regarded or treated as separate entities. If one accepts the theory of opposites as a cosmic reality, then it would not be possible to consider only one side to the exclusion of the other. It would be ludicrous to assume that the opposite would simply follow along in the agreement. Both must therefore have an equal place in the process of transformation, growth and enlightenment.
As with any pairs of opposites, one can become possessed if too much energy is manifesting at one pole. For example, a person consumed by instinct might be controlled by obsessive sexuality or by food cravings, whereas to be possessed by spirit would mean being driven by ideology. In ether case, there is no freedom whatsoever.
Carl Jung speaks of a place where the opposite poles of spirit and matter both meet and don’t meet. This is the place that we would term today the “subtle” body. That intermediate place between spirit and body, between the spirit and earthly realms. It is said in ancient yogic teachings that this invisible subtle body is connected to our physical body by a slender silken cord suggesting perhaps that the place of connection between the physical body and the subtle body is the soul.
This is why when we are experiencing insufferable pain and stress we must focus our attentions and intentions on both sides of these opposites in ourselves. Working with the subtle body means maintaining a delicate, complex balance between our physical and spiritual needs. To neglect the body is to neglect half of our world. It is to neglect from whence we come, the prima materia, the Mother. It disregards our connection to earth, to matter, to the world of nature and to the feminine. To overlook the spiritual world is to dismiss the possibility of healing. Both aspects are needed for transformation. The psyche must include the entire spectrum, from instinct to spirit.
The end of October, what we think of as “Halloween” and “Devil’s Night” is a pointer to this tension between the two worlds. It’s harvest! A time to fill up and a time to share. A time to share and honour our connection to each other (Thanksgiving) and a time to fill our bodies with the nutrients it will need to sustain through the long, cold winter. I wish all of you a rich and enlightening October!

Quote:
“Anne Maguire, analyst and physician, tells us that the archetype of fire as it appears in both ancient pictures and instinctive reactions comes to us in order to promote the healing of the skin of the afflicted. The archetype of fire manifests in the skin disease, bringing heat and pain in order to lead the afflicted person to a level of consciousness where the psychic difficulties that lie behind the disease can be recognized. As the skin is the mirror of the soul, so fire and emotion enter one’s life. Without emotional fire, there is neither light nor life. Only through conflict can we begin to see the meaning of skin affliction. Emotion becomes our carrier of consciousness.”

Psychic Readings by Kathleen
Research on ways of knowing which are beyond the intellect gained a marked impetus in 1983 when psychologist Howard Gardner, a professor of cognition and education at Harvard, wrote a book, Frames of Mind on his theory of multiple intelligences. Gardner challenged the dominance of IQ as a measurement of intelligence saying that there were other crucial forms of intelligence that had no correlation with IQ. He identified seven (there is that magical number 7!) and much to his surprise his theory resonated to a degree he never would have expected. His book became an overnight bestseller. His greatest contribution was to get us thinking in terms of multiple intelligence. Many of you have probably heard of Daniel Goleman’s work Emotional Intelligence. Goleman argued that qualities such as empathy, self-awareness, and persistence were likewise crucial components of this intelligence, and that they could be taught. Goleman also pointed to the limits of IQ as a measure of intelligence and made a compelling argument that emotional intelligence, of which gut feelings are a component, enable a different kind of knowing. Like Gardner, Goleman hit a collective nerve. His book also become an overnight publication success.
My experience in life and in my work especially leads me to believe there is yet another kind of intelligence so far missed in the grand schema of psychology, which I would describe as intuitive intelligence. What if every peculiar knowing was about activating an intelligence that facilitated a capacity to see things as they are, even if we’re unable to define it? My clients often ask me, “Kathleen, how can you know what you do?! We’ve never even met. I don’t get it!!”
And to be honest I cannot describe it very well either. I try but it ends up sounding rather silly and inane. I keep hoping an intelligent explanation or at least description will cross my path or reveal itself out of the well of my own psyche.
I can read another person accurately because I become them. I know them from the inside because I’ve stopped being separate. I go where they are (which is why geographical proximity is not as relevant as the connection I feel with the person). I draw upon how connected we all are so I really am seeing with their eyes when I read them. All I have to do is get myself out of the way which involves being mindful about who and what I take in psychically and physically. If I am overstressed or tired (and no I don’t drink because any form of substance that artificially alters my consciousness is definitely going to interfere with connection!) or emotionally charged, my performance starts slipping like an injured athlete’s body. I will suggest to clients they wait until the next day for their reading if I’m not feeling in top form. So I do know for sure there is a brain activity involved. I think when readers’ lives or psyches are in disarray they really can’t tune into another person’s reality. When you are seeing an intuitive either for a reading or healing, I recommend you always ask how they are. If they are not in good shape you can be sure it’s going to be almost impossible for them to get themselves out of the way to read or heal you. This is why I’ve stopped doing parties, events or shows. I found by the last client I was really too tired to do as good a job as I had with the first person I’d worked with which really wasn’t fair.
When I have to rebook a client I hope they understand it’s for their benefit more than mine. I think most of you do understand that the work looks much less demanding that it actually is. Drawing upon intuitive intelligence is as demanding a task as drawing upon any of the other forms of intelligence. If you ever taken an IQ test, you’ll remember how exhausted you felt by the end of it. Getting ourselves out of the way involves putting all our psychic muscle to work to shoulder our own egos off to the side and our egos tend to be weighty. I recommend it though. There is no better exercise for the mind and spirit.

In the Native American tradition, as well as in Hinduism and Buddhism, that psychic plane, that inner “invisible” world from which, in darkness, imagery comes forth, is the “other world,” or the real world, what we all see “normally” is the world of maya, the false world, the world that is not but appears to be.”

August Greetings!
2. August 2011 by admin.
I have been uniquely blessed in my ongoing process of spiritual unfoldment which began when I was a child. I became aware of my spiritual gifts objectively at about 12 years of age. Up until then I just assumed everyone thought the way I did. Once aware of it however I was relentless in my determination to understand it and at 15 years old I gave a presentation on telepathy to my Grade 10 Physics class that was enthusiastically received. In fact an informal vote was taken by the students to elect my presentation the best Physics class ever. Not that it was a terrifically high bar to leap.
At 17 I was racing home from school (now in Grade 12) every day to learn and practice yoga with Karena on PBS. No one was doing yoga in those days (1972) that I knew of anyway and since I was already suffering from a somewhat outcast position to my peers, I certainly wasn’t bragging about my perfect downward dog. But then I had already been warned by my mother to keep much of who I was on the quiet anyway. She said if people knew you could read their minds they might do worse than shun you. So I researched, did my yoga and vented to my mother who was unrelenting in her support of my individuality. She abhorred conformity and generally liked very few people so the fact that I was undeniably showing signs of becoming the most eccentric girl in town really tickled her. And she would have loads of fun playing psychic games with me. She would urge me to “guess” at someone’s name, where they were from or some small detail about them and then we would ask and when it was revealed that I was right, it would make her day. She would crow with excitement and joy. So not only was my development supported, it was enormously celebrated on a daily basis. It never occurred to me that I might be just crazy. Or that she was for that matter.
As I matured I just naturally gravitated to people who were also interested in spiritual matters. I had a stream of spiritual teachers that gave me just the right guidance at the most auspicious time. I sought academic training throughout North America that encouraged in depth psycho/spiritual pursuit. I studied Carl Jung extensively until I was lecturing on Jung for the Jung Society of Greater Victoria in the early ’90’s. I did a Master’s degree in Religion and Culture finding classes and teachers that shared a “somewhat” like mind. I’ve had a host of wonderful role models as my therapists and counselors.
In my practice I am honoured and yet concerned for the people who have not been as fortunate as I. I have met many people over the years who were on the verge of suicide as a result of feeling isolated and overwhelmed with spiritual experiences. I have had clients who were intent on exploring their inner life whose families perceived them as crazy and wanted to put them on psychiatric medications to stem the flow of spiritual downloading. Most of these people have not had the benefit of a conceptual framework to understand what they are experiencing. There are times when regressive behaviour and severe disorientation are a part of spiritual growth and it requires patience not medication.
f you are going through an overwhelming spiritual unfoldment don’t despair. You aren’t alone and you’re not crazy.

Quote:
When higher energies enter the body, the chronic body tensions begin to loosen their hold. In the process of this liberation from the samskaras, the body will go through physiological and/or psychological experiences. This may be dramatic at times, subtle or imperceptible at other times. It is not uncommon for a meditator to be sitting quietly and suddenly be wriggling all over, or having uncontrollable muscular spasms in some part of the body. Moods ared also symptomatic of release of the samskaras. These may include irritability, sadness, joy, giggling, fearfulness, and anxiety. Moods also seem to be harder to control, which can be humiliating or frightening for someone used to being in control.”

Summer Greetings
Psychic Readings by Kathleen
I have been pondering soul, spirit and energy lately having been triggered by a client I have been working closely with for a number of years. She has been recently diagnosed with lung cancer. She came to see me to find out how things were going to go. She is keenly aware that she has an arduous path ahead and plans to “fight this thing” in her words. Determined, practical, and a gifted administrator, she is putting a series of healing plans into place. Of course irrepressibly curious, she wondered if she was going to successfully kick this pest out the door or would it get the best of her. Death is a difficult transition to predict because spirit, being our primary advisor, really doesn’t have the same judgements or fears about death. Soul and spirit has little care whether we stay embodied for twenty years or one hundred, nor does it give a whit if we’re rich, homeless or content.
I think its an enlightening exercise for all of us to fantasize about hearing a potentially fatal diagnosis. There is nothing quite like it to catapult us into a frenzy of prioritizing. Suddenly everything that meant nothing now means everything, and things that mean everything are appallingly irrelevant. Too often new age books direct us to think only positively, to see our lives as unfolding exactly as we would egotistically desire. But it’s far more helpful actually to look at your embodied life as imminently coming to a close. Because in reality for all you know it is.
We may even be inspired to give deeper and more profound consideration to those parts of ourselves that are not perceivable to our five senses such as our Soul and Spirit. To approach Soul, Renaissance theologians would have an initiate study the vastness of the night sky as a metaphor for the vastness within. The soul is the source of the most subtle energies of your being. Yet this subtle energy give form to everything else about you, from your cells to your sense of self. If Spirit, as it is often defined is the all-pervasive, intelligent energy of creation, soul is its manifestation at the personal level. Soul and Spirit are the unfathomable, vital mysteries of our existence. We can, however, experience them directly, whether through the energies of love, contemplation, healing, or mystical experience.
I think of soul as the spark of Spirit that infuses the body with life and the brain with consciousness. When the soul leaves, the brain dims, the body dies. To work with a person’s energy is to touch a soul as well as a body. Ironically, the deeper you enter into the life of your personal soul, the more fully you identify with your roots in the life of a universal, unifying intelligent Spirit. And the better your body will fare.
When all your energies are brought into harmony, your body flourishes. And when your body flourishes, your soul has a soil in which it can blossom in the world. That’s why I often ask my clients how they are feeling physically and if they are listening to the needs of body. Too many people ignore the physical signals that are telling them to get more rest, eat better, have a good belly laugh, cry a river of tears and take a walk. Adults in our culture consider it ridiculous pampering to treat their bodies as they would a baby. That’s “babying yourself!” But neither our soul, spirit or body exists as as separate aspects. If your soul is undernourished, it just might conclude staying here on earth is a waste of time in which case it stops sending nourishing energy to the body to prevail. If you spend all your time contemplating spirit and not playing with your body, spiritual nourishment is not received into the body also leaving it undernourished and wasting away.
Throughout July, when we in the northern climes finally have warmth, long days of sunlight and local produced food supply, remember to find joy in physical expression and pleasure. Eat fresh, run around outside, note your dreams in the morning and pray for others in strife. Keep the energies flowing freely through all the aspects of yourself and have a luscious summer.

“My health returned while I was in Fiji. My family and I lived out in the wilds, far from the nearest town. We swam in the ocean every day. We ate breadfruit from the ground and fish from the sea. Nothing was processed. Nothing was canned. Everything was fresh and organic. There were no fumes from the cars and no chemicals in our clothing. Life was lived at a slow pace. It was a world where you could just BE. There was no competition and little stress. There was no radio, no newspaper, no television. By simply living naturally, I grew healthy.”

Psychic Readings by Kathleen
In the past few years my passion for women’s spirituality and the feminine journey to enlightenment has really gained traction on the Victorian woman, the accompanying growth spurt of spiritualism and what is now commonly referred to as “New Age” movement. The secret mystical society called The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn is the group credited for the mass dissemination of the 20th Century Tarot. This 19th century secret society marked the first time men and women worked together as equals in ceremonies whose purpose it was to test, purify, and exalt the individual’s spiritual nature to facilitate a unity with their Guardian Angel. While the HIS-tory of the Hermetic Order is well documented making several of its male members famous, (Yeats for example), their female counterparts remain obscure. Shocking when you consider what they accomplished for the status of women. Even within the sufferage movement, these women of magic were glanced over in HER-story books. Spirituality and women remains one of the last arenas to be integrated into the advancement of women’s equality. The feminine journey to enlightenment is not the same path as the masculine but that doesn’t mean it isn’t as valid, challenging and sacred.
The Victorian women of magic did not accept the roles and boundaries defined for them by family circumstances and societal expectations. They remade themselves after their own magical images and helped to remake their world. They belonged to the timeless legacy of the priestesses, sibyls, and healers who throughout HER-story have been the adept midwives of the psyche. These women inspired themselves and others to transcend the limitations of their contemporary cultural prejudices. In the Golden Dawn mythos, everything can be used to further the Great Work which was the awareness and integration of the whole Self - from the sublime to the beast within. The personal dark aspects, or so-called evil elements, were named the qlliphoth. When mastered and harnessed in place, the qliphoth served one as, “a mighty steed, a powerful beast upon which to ride wherever one wanted to go” (represented by the Strength card in the Tarot). Later of course this would be re-named in Jungian psychology as shadow work. Jung believed that to shine the light of consciousness into our darkest shadowy natures was the single most vital process to spiritual awakening, wholeness and personal power. Shadow integration also represented a vital moral function whereby consciousness of our own personal shadows would also remove a slice of darkness from the collective shadow. Collective shadow being the modern equivalent for Devil and evil. These magician women became the receptors for the collective shadow of oppression towards women. They were viewed and discussed as if they were sexual deviants bereft of wisdom and creativity!
Four central archetypal images accompanied the Victorian female magician: the Angel, the Demon, the Old Maid, and the Fallen Woman. Women could only exist as spiritual extremes, such as the Virgin or the Whore, the Saint or the Sinner, Madonna or Lilith, Angel or Serpent; she must be either divine or demonic. This is why as you study our spiritual and magician fore-Mothers you must be vigilant in recognizing the author’s biases.
Our modern spiritual inspiration has been profoundly shaped and guided by these extraordinary, Victorian female magicians. We often forget the ways in which our freedom of expression, choices, and independence were due to victories hard won through the sacrifices of our ancestors - especially the women! The political and cultural realities of our own time thus took substance from the experience of outcast women of former times such as the women of the Golden Dawn. Pamela Coleman Smith’s experience highlights the appalling creative negation of these uniquely gifted women. She left a critical legacy to all magicians through her Tarot deck drawing detailed vignettes of the meanings of the Minor Arcana. The deck painted by Pamela was given the title of the Rider-Waite (Rider being the publisher and Waite being a wealthy, high ranking Mason). Pamela’s name wasn’t even mentioned until the late seventies as the illustrator/interpreter of what has become the most widely used Tarot deck in the world. She worked tirelessly for years painting this deck without compensation or even recognition, passing to spirit years later, a poverty stricken social outcast.
If your spiritual journey takes you down the path of the anthropology of the sacred, don’t forget to explore the foundations laid down by our Magical fore-Mothers. It will keep your perspective balanced, fluid and heart-centred.

Quote:
“She used the word Yachad as a password and invoked a serpent to lead her to the Adytum of Isis. When the snake appeared, she made it yawn. Entering its mouth, she went down some steps until she came to the Book of Thoth. She tipped up a stone to reveal revolving steps going farther down to a room with five alcoves. Each recess contained a different object: a rolled papyrus, a loaf of bread, liquids for drinking, garments to wear, and vessels of oil. She returned a second time, bringing offerings to the five shrines and received in return a ruby and the red wine of life. She could either let the wine “fall with generation” (ferment) or “be exalted into yellow flame of the intelligible life” (be distilled). She also received a secret name-with ineffable power over the material body-written on the papyrus role. The loaf of bread had an aureole around it “like soft white feathers gently buffeting the body-solidifying it.” The garments included an Egyptian headdress called the nemyss with a Uraeus serpent and fifteen yards of kilted and twisted white robe. Finally she was given instruction about how to enter the sanctuary when she next returned. Florence might have used such visions in the Sphere Group, containing as they did specific ritual instructions and important symbols and techniques. But her group was under suspicion, and her “astral unions” with her guides called evil.”

Happy Mother’s Day Kathleen
Psychic Readings by Kathleen
Many clients share their own spiritual experiences with me which is one of the most privileged aspects of my work whether it involves communications with a loved one in spirit or having an inexplicable psychic insight from telepathy to clairvoyance (knowing what is going to happen in the future). There are times, however, when spiritual “emergence” can lead to a spiritual “emergency” and there are several contributing factors that can align psychic insight with psychological disturbance.
The factor which most contributes to a spiritual emergency is belief/cognitive rigidity. Spiritual problems are less likely to occur when a person can weather a life-changing situation gracefully, by both letting go of what has been lost and opening with a positive, trusting attitude toward the future. Spiritual problems are more likely to occur when a person adheres to notions concerning how life should be and resists change. People who are completely identified with narrow beliefs about the expression of spiritual life will tend to have more emotional distress than people who are welcoming about spiritual life manifesting in a myriad of ways.
When a person is receptive to change, inner experiences are interesting, even welcome or exciting. A person who feels threatened is also more likely to feel shame thereby blocking any impetus to reach out for guidance and help. On the helper side however, traditionally schooled psychologists and psychiatrists are not trained or supervised to assist clients through the mire of spiritual awakening to a healthful and enriched life. In fact just the opposite is true. The DSM-1V which is the bible of psychological pathology suggests that the symptoms of spiritual awakening are in fact an indicator of mental illness.
Profound spiritual awakening for example can result in a disorientation which makes a person less interested in work, in social contacts and self care due to the contrast between the magnificent magnitude of spiritual life and the minutiae mundaneness of day to day living. Add to that the monumental task in communicating about one’s experience to others (in spiritual emergency this is the result of the noetic quality of the experience, not symptomatic of confused thinking). A spiritual experience can result too in dissociation (in spiritual emergency this dissociation is a transitory part of the process of integrating one’s experience). All of these phenomena tend to subside after a spiritual crisis whereas in a chronic psychosis they do not.
Spiritual emergence is a personal realization of a reality beyond ego reality, and, ultimately, one’s unity with all things. When we are given an appropriate conceptual framework and community support, a life enhancing spiritual awakening results. When we have spiritual problems and are perceived as out of touch with reality, we may be subjected to an inappropriate diagnosis and course of treatment which only serve to intensify the problems! I often joke with my clients that my vocation became so much more interesting and rewarding once I was freed from the parameters set by traditional counseling methodology. As a self-outed psychic advisor, who am I criticize? I am joyously perceived to be well outside any bounds of normalcy which has opened the door in a very exciting way for me to hear/witness personal stories which are enlivening and have supported me tremendously on my road to spiritual understanding and wisdom.

Quote:
“An open heart, which creates the ability to be present with compassion, is the most important qualification for a Helper of someone in spiritual emergency. More than anything else, it is the open-heartedness of the Helper that is essential to facilitating healing or balancing. Furthermore, a person who has already had a spiritual experience can give reassurance to a person in spiritual crisis. People who have had an opening to the Divine embody a knowing-ness of the Divine. This deep personal knowledge and the ability to reassure clients about spiritual experience are important characteristics of a Helper. Finally, it is critical that the Helper have a familiarity with the unconscious. That the Helper has confronted their own demons and become conscious of the psychic and astral levels with themselves. With this familiarity comes a respect for the unconscious and , relatively speaking, less fear in dealing with it. A Helper who has worked with the unconscious is able to provide a client in spiritual emergency with a workable strategy, a model, for relating to unconscious material as it arises.”
